    Suppression of allograft rejection with FK506: I. prolonged cardiac and liver survival in rats following short-course therapy

    Heterotopic heart and orthotopic liver grafts from ACI donors were transplanted to Lewis rat recipients that were treated with a 3 (or 4) day course of FK506 IM that was started on postoperative day 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Hearts, which rejected after a median of 6 days in untreated controls, always had prolonged survival (median 91 days) when treatment was started on postoperative day 4. The results were inferior when treatment was started earlier or later than this, but even when the first dose of FK506 was on postoperative day 5, one day before rejection was imminent in controls, the median survival was 50 days. The poorest results with a median graft survival of only 36 days were obtained when injections were on days 0–3. Results were similar with liver grafts that rejected after a median time of 10 days in nontreated controls but that usually survived permanently after a 3 (or 4) day FK506 course starting on day 0, 2, 3, or 4.     Measurement and Particle Statistics in the Szilard Engine

    A Szilard Engine is a hypothetical device which is able to extract work from a single thermal reservoir by measuring the position of particles within the engine. We derive the amount of work that can be extracted from such a device in the low temperature limit. Interestingly, we show this work is determined by the information gain of the initial measurement rather than by the number and type of particles which constitute the working substance. Our work provides another clear connection between information gain and extractable work in thermodynamical processes.Comment: 4 page

    Inhibitory Effect of the root of Polygala tenuifolia on Bradykinin and COX 2-Mediated Pain and Inflammatory Activity

    Purpose: To gain insight into the mechanisms of analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of the root extract of Polygala tenuifolia.Methods: Polygala tenuifolia was extracted with 70 % methanol and tested for analgesic and antiinflammatory activities (0.1, 1, 10 and 100 mg/kg) using the following models: acetic acid-induced writhing, rat paw edema, bradykinin inhibtion with rat ileum, and prostaglandin assay.Results: Administration of the Polygala tenuifolia extract at 100 mg/kg dose produced significant analgesic effect on acetic acid-induced writhing (97 % inhibition) but its effect in the tail-flick test was not significant (p < 0.05). In addition, the extract exerted significant anti-inflammatory effect in the rat paw edema model (8 to 33 % inhibition) at doses ranging from 0.1 - 100.0 mg/kg). A significant inhibitory action (53%) on the bradykinin-mediated contractions of rat ileum was also observed. Furthermore, the extract significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited the production of lipopolysaccharides-induced 6-keto-PGF1α by 28% in macrophage cultures.Conclusion: These results provide evidence that the Polygala tenuifolia root extract exerts analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects via its significant inhibitory effect on acetic acid writhing test, bradykinin-mediated actions as well as on 6-keto-PGF1α induction.Keywords: Polygalae radix, Bradylinin, Prostaglandin, COX-2, Inflammation, Analgesi

    Dimerization-Induced Fermi-Surface Reconstruction in IrTe2

    We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study on IrTe2 single crystals showing complex dimer formations. By comparing the angle dependence of dHvA oscillations with band structure calculations, we show distinct Fermi surface reconstruction induced by a 1/5-type and a 1/8-type dimerizations. This verifies that an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional conducting plane across the layers is induced by dimerization in both cases. A phase transition to the 1/8 phase with higher dimer density reveals that local instabilities associated with intra-and interdimer couplings are the main driving force for complex dimer formations in IrTe2.X11149sciescopu

    Doublet method for very fast autocoding

    BACKGROUND: Autocoding (or automatic concept indexing) occurs when a software program extracts terms contained within text and maps them to a standard list of concepts contained in a nomenclature. The purpose of autocoding is to provide a way of organizing large documents by the concepts represented in the text. Because textual data accumulates rapidly in biomedical institutions, the computational methods used to autocode text must be very fast. The purpose of this paper is to describe the doublet method, a new algorithm for very fast autocoding. METHODS: An autocoder was written that transforms plain-text into intercalated word doublets (e.g. "The ciliary body produces aqueous humor" becomes "The ciliary, ciliary body, body produces, produces aqueous, aqueous humor"). Each doublet is checked against an index of doublets extracted from a standard nomenclature. Matching doublets are assigned a numeric code specific for each doublet found in the nomenclature. Text doublets that do not match the index of doublets extracted from the nomenclature are not part of valid nomenclature terms. Runs of matching doublets from text are concatenated and matched against nomenclature terms (also represented as runs of doublets). RESULTS: The doublet autocoder was compared for speed and performance against a previously published phrase autocoder. Both autocoders are Perl scripts, and both autocoders used an identical text (a 170+ Megabyte collection of abstracts collected through a PubMed search) and the same nomenclature (neocl.xml, containing over 102,271 unique names of neoplasms). In side-by-side comparison on the same computer, the doublet method autocoder was 8.4 times faster than the phrase autocoder (211 seconds versus 1,776 seconds). The doublet method codes 0.8 Megabytes of text per second on a desktop computer with a 1.6 GHz processor. In addition, the doublet autocoder successfully matched terms that were missed by the phrase autocoder, while the phrase autocoder found no terms that were missed by the doublet autocoder. CONCLUSIONS: The doublet method of autocoding is a novel algorithm for rapid text autocoding. The method will work with any nomenclature and will parse any ascii plain-text. An implementation of the algorithm in Perl is provided with this article. The algorithm, the Perl implementation, the neoplasm nomenclature, and Perl itself, are all open source materials

    Reduction of Motion Artifacts and Improvement of R Peak Detecting Accuracy Using Adjacent Non-Intrusive ECG Sensors

    Non-intrusive electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring has many advantages: easy to measure and apply in daily life. However, motion noise in the measured signal is the major problem of non-intrusive measurement. This paper proposes a method to reduce the noise and to detect the R peaks of ECG in a stable manner in a sitting arrangement using non-intrusive sensors. The method utilizes two capacitive ECG sensors (cECGs) to measure ECG, and another two cECGs located adjacent to the sensors for ECG are added to obtain the information on motion. Then, active noise cancellation technique and the motion information are used to reduce motion noise. To verify the proposed method, ECG was measured indoors and during driving, and the accuracy of the detected R peaks was compared. After applying the method, the sum of sensitivity and positive predictivity increased 8.39% on average and 26.26% maximally in the data. Based on the results, it was confirmed that the motion noise was reduced and that more reliable R peak positions could be obtained by the proposed method.     Fabrication of n-type carbon nanotube field-effect transistors by Al doping

    We report the effect of an Al layer, covering the central part of the nanotube channel, on the electrical transport properties of carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs). The CNFETs, consisting of single-walled carbon nanotube or double-walled carbon nanotube between two Pd electrodes on top of Si O2 layer, which showed p -type or ambipolar transport behaviors, exhibit clear n -type characteristics after the Al deposition. We ascribe such conversions into n -type behaviors to the electron doping in the Al-covered nanotube region, which results in the bending of the nanotube bands nearby the edges of the Al layer. This technique, Al deposition under a high vacuum, may give rise to a practical fabrication method for the n -type CNFET, which may enable us to develop complementary logic nanotube electronic devices.open151

    The anomalous U(1) global symmetry and flavors from an SU(5) x SU(5)' GUT in Z12IZ_{12-I} orbifold compactification

    In string compactifications, frequently there appears the anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry which belonged to E8×\timesE8 of the heterotic string. This anomalous U(1) gauge boson obtains mass at the compactification scale, just below 101810^{18\,}GeV, by absorbing one pseudoscalar (corresponding to the model-independent axion) from the second rank anti-symmetric tensor field BMNB_{MN}. Below the compactification scale, there results a global symmetry U(1)anom_{\rm anom} whose charge QanomQ_{\rm anom} is the original gauge U(1) charge. This is the most natural global symmetry, realizing the "invisible" axion. This global symmetry U(1)anom_{\rm anom} is suitable for a flavor symmetry. In the simplest compactification model with the flipped SU(5) grand unification, we calculate all the low energy parameters in terms of the vacuum expectation values of the standard model singlets.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figur
